Job Description

The Poppy Residences is looking for a full time, permanent Cook to be a part of its team. Centrally located in beautiful Burnaby, BC, The Poppy Residences is an Independent Living Community offering 70 private one-bedroom suites designed for self-sufficient seniors who value their independence, enjoy the companionship of like-minded individuals, and want the comfort of knowing help is there should they ever need it.
Under the direction of the Chef or delegate, the Cook will be responsible for the daily preparation and cooking of meals and nourishments from a menu and recipes set by the Chef. Maintains a safe and sanitary workplace on an ongoing basis.
Duties include:
• Responsible for the production of menu items including preparation, production and presentation
• Maintains a high standard of food quality and service
• Using standardized recipes based on standard portion sizes, prepares and cooks hot and cold entrees, baked goods and desserts for both general and therapeutic diets
• Tests food items for food palatability and temperature and adjusts accordingly
• Prepares special entrees, short orders or catered items as required
• Operates cooking equipment in a safe, proper manner. Checks equipment and cooking area after use to ensure safety requirements are maintained. Ensures all equipment is maintained in the appropriate areas
• Ensures maintenance of food rotations in storage in order to minimize food spoilage and waste and maintained in the appropriate areas
• Ensures safety and hygiene practice/procedures are adhered to and assists in maintaining quality assurance standards that comply with all Health and Safety Standards and Regulations
• Practices and maintains cleanliness and sanitation according to required standard set by Chef
• Ensures the proper preparation, delivery and storage of food to ensure the safety of residents, guests and the public
• Coordinates the activities and work flow during production, presentation, and clean up.
• Participates in the preparation of specific food items
• In the absence of the Chef and or delegate, is responsible for the production of the department
• Reports defective or damaged equipment to the Chef
• Follow guidelines in maintaining departmental budget control by adhering to management policies and procedures of stock and inventory control as required
• Caries out all aspects of routine and rational cleaning throughout the kitchen including
but not limited to the following; sweeping, washing, polishing, and scrubbing various
surfaces
• Cares for equipment, supplies and work areas by keeping equipment clean and safely stored: keeps work areas in an orderly, safe and clean condition at all times
• Understands the use of and application of cleaning chemicals, wash dishes, pots and pans, cutlery, utensils, stacks and rack dishes, inventories
• Promotes and maintains positive communication and relationships among management, staff, residents and the public
• Ensures residents’ and customers rights of privacy and confidentiality are maintained, except in the proper operation of the business
• Maintains a current knowledge of and complies with all the facility policy and procedures
• Performs other related duties as required.
Position requirements:

• Secondary school completion
• Completion of a diploma from a recognized technical program for cooks
• Minimum of 2 years professional work experience as a Cook or similar position
• Food Safe Certificate, WHMIS
• Must have a clear, recent criminal record check
• Must be in good health and free from communicable diseases, physically and mentally
• Able to carry out the assigned duties in the working environment such as lifting, bending, stooping and stretching
• Must be able to lift and transport heavy product up to fifty (50) pounds correctly
• Possess the qualities and attitude that respects and maintains the spirit, dignity and individuality of the residents and employees
• Able to speak and understand English competently and to understand written and oral instructions in English. Must have the ability to communicate effectively
• Must have the ability to safely and efficiently operate all equipment associated with the duties of the position
• Must have the ability to communicate effectively, organize the departmental operations, and supervise subordinates when acting as Lead Hand
• Must have the ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relations by displaying tact, courtesy and patience with residents, coworkers, superiors, visitors and volunteers in the workplace
• Must have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision
