Job Description:
The pharmacy assistant performs tasks related to preparing medications under the supervision of a
licensed pharmacist. The pharmacy assistant will also assist in filling prescriptions and managing the pharmacy’s patient files. In addition, they will perform clerical functions and assists the pharmacist and/or the pharmacy technician with drug dispensing tasks, payment for services and medication provided and billing through the patient’s insurance provider(s). The successful pharmacy assistant applicant will offer top-notch client service in a polite, informed, and professional way. In addition to focusing on achieving pharmacy excellence in the areas of customer service, workflow efficiency, and inventory control, the successful applicant will oversee identifying and scheduling professional clinical services.
Main Duties include:
Greeting patients and discusses type and quantity of medications sought for purchase
Assessing prescriptions and entering prescription information into the pharmacy’s database
Assisting pharmacist and other pharmacy staff with maintaining inventories of medications and
pharmaceutical products
Counting, measuring, and packaging prescription medications accurately and safely, following
established protocols and procedures, under Pharmacist’s supervision
Scheduling and confirming appointments
Assisting with processing insurance claims and coordinating prescription transfers as required
Pricing and stocking items in the pharmacy
Communicating with patients and escalating queries to the pharmacist
Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy area, including medication shelves, dispensing counters, and workstations
Disposing of expired medications and hazardous waste according to regulatory guidelines
Assisting with special projects, promotions, and events as assigned by pharmacy management
Providing excellent and empathic customer service to patients.
Employment Requirements and Qualifications:
Completion of a pharmacy assistant college program, ranging from six to twelve months or completion or completion of secondary school and several months of on-the-job training
Several months of experience in retail pharmacy
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to interact professionally with patients and colleagues
Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks such as medication
counting and labelling
Effective organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload in a fast-paced
environment
Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and pharmacy software
systems (experience with Kroll is an asset)
Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with pharmacy staff and contribute to a positive team
environment
Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on the operational hours of the pharmacy.
