Position Overview
We are seeking a 1.0 FTE Continuing Indigenous Student Success Teacher

SD 71 is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island in the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. Located within the Comox Valley is the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox and the Village of Cumberland; each providing their own unique services and community cultures. The Comox Valley is a desirable place to live with great ocean beaches, golf, skiing, hiking, swimming and boating. In addition, the community has strong and vibrant arts and cultural programs.

Responsibilities:
Relationships and Mentoring – Build strong connections with Indigenous students through mentorship, regular check-ins, and welcoming, supportive spaces.
Academic Support – Support student success by monitoring attendance, academics, graduation progress, and assisting with school transitions.
Collaboration and Student Planning – Work with staff to provide culturally responsive support, track student progress, and participate in support planning.
Cultural Engagement – Promote Indigenous culture, identity, and belonging through cultural activities, land-based learning, and community connections.
Family Engagement and Career Planning – Engage families and support career and post-secondary planning through communication, events, scholarships, and career exploration opportunities.

Anticipated start date: July 1, 2026

Skills, Attributes and Competencies
Indigenous Ancestry required
Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous youth and communities.
Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and educational challenges.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Knowledge of and respect for local protocols.
Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, educators, and community partners.
Knowledge of academic tracking systems and student support strategies
