Position Overview
We are seeking a 1.0 FTE Indigenous Student Success Teacher

SD 71 is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island in the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First Nation. Located within the Comox Valley is the City of Courtenay, the Town of Comox and the Village of Cumberland; each providing their own unique services and community cultures. The Comox Valley is a desirable place to live with great ocean beaches, golf, skiing, hiking, swimming and boating. In addition, the community has strong and vibrant arts and cultural programs.

Responsibilities:
Relationships and Mentoring: Build strong, trusting relationships with Indigenous students through regular check-ins and mentorship; monitor attendance, behavior, and academic performance; provide guidance and support to help students overcome challenges.
Academic Support: Assist students in setting achievable academic goals, accessing tutoring, and developing study skills; collaborate with teachers to create supportive learning plans and monitor progress.
Career and Transition Planning: Support students as they transition between grades, schools, and post-secondary paths; connect them with career exploration opportunities, work experience, and skill development programs.
Cultural Identity and Belonging: Encourage pride in Indigenous heritage; facilitate participation in cultural activities, connect students with Elders, and help them engage with community events.
Family and Community Engagement: Strengthen partnerships between families, schools, and community organizations; encourage family involvement in school activities and support collaborative approaches to student success.

Anticipated start date: November 17, 2025.

Skills, Attributes and Competencies
• Indigenous Ancestry required
• Valid BC Teaching Certificate
• Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and educational strengths and challenges.
• Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous youth and communities
