Job Description
New Westminster’s Electrical Utility Department is seeking a dynamic technologist to help the Electric Utility design, manage, and build distribution and substation projects. This position will report to the manager of Distribution and Substations and will work closely with design staff and field crews to manage new Electrical Utility projects from start to finish.
Responsibilities:
• Creates new distribution designs for overhead and underground work to facilitate new electrical connections.
• Creates cost estimates for new distribution or substation projects.
• Manages distribution or substation projects as needed including new secondary conduits and infrastructure, new primary voltage duct banks, cable installations.
• Provides field inspections of the work to ensure they are installed correctly and to specifications.
• Determines scope of required alterations/additions to the electrical distribution system as they pertain to new developments in the City and system reinforcements.
• Participates in substation maintenance planning and upgrades projects.
• Coordinates multiple projects simultaneously, liaising with developer, obtaining approvals/registrations, ordering equipment/materials, scheduling and managing the work, overseeing contractors and leading quality control inspections in the field.
• Coordinates with field staff and helps with asset maintenance and inventories.
• Participates in the long-term planning of the Electrical Utility.
• Participates in planning meetings and discussion with other City departments, developers, architects, consultants, provincial utilities and others regarding large developments as they relate to electrical utility issues, providing input and information that could affect the electrical design.
Requirements for this position:
• Certification as an Engineering Technologist.
• Knowledge and experience managing design projects, preferably with an Electric Utility.
• Knowledge of the concepts, practices and equipment used in the design and implementation of electrical utility distribution systems or substations is an asset.
• Experience in the design of electrical distribution systems or substations.
• Working knowledge of the fundamentals of budgeting and standard costing procedures.
• Planning and coordination skills to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
• Communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and provide input and information that affects design decisions.
• Problem-solving and decision-making skills to address challenges related to multiple projects.
• Valid B.C. driver’s license.
