STATUS: Regular Full Time

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours/week
SALARY: $34.27 per hour (2024 rate)
The Engineering Department is seeking a hardworking, motivated individual to perform maintenance and custodial work involving graffiti removal, cleanliness, upkeep, restorative work and minor repair of assets around the city’s streetscape and park spaces. You will remove graffiti off a variety of city owned assets including but not limited to roadways, sidewalks, lamp posts, utility poles, outside facilities, artificial turf fields, picnic shelters, and signage. You will maintain city owned assets which include but are not limited to benches, picnic tables, and playground areas. This position will complete inspection reports, detailed reports on work that is completed and ongoing, have a thorough understanding of playground safety, reports issues to superior as required and perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks based on seasonal requirements. This work involves competent knowledge of chemicals, paints, associated tools and their safe and effective work procedures, some independence of action and judgement in day to day functions, supervision and training or seasonal staff, and refer unusual problems or policy matters to a superior who checks and reviews the work to ensure mainten¬ance of established standards.
If you have the following characteristics and qualifications, we want to hear from you:
• Completion of Grade 12, plus some experience in chemical safety and application, restorative work and equipment used in this work, inspections, unskilled/semi-skilled mainten¬ance or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid BC Driver’s License.
• Considerable knowledge of park areas, playgrounds, residential and commercial streetscapes, Electrical Utility assets, other City owned properties/assets and the relevant rules and regulations governing the use of the same.
• Working knowledge of the methods, safety, materials, tools and equipment used in graffiti removal and general maintenance tasks and restorative work.
• Skill in the use and care of pressure washers (hot/cold), chemicals, PPE, and graffiti removal tools including but not limited to hand planers, brushes, sanders, painting supplies, appropriate chemical containers, metal bristle brooms, and surface cleaners.
• Certificated in WHMIS.
• Ability to identify graffiti/vandalism and their procedure for removal.
• Ability to perform a variety of inspections and maintenance tasks, unskilled/semi-skilled repair work and unskilled/semi skilled maintenance duties under minimal supervision.
• Ability to deal courteously with the public and coworkers.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions, and operate related communication equipment used for the purposes of relaying or receiving information.
• Ability to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check.
*This position works a non-standard schedule, where working days may change due to operational needs, and shifts may be scheduled on weekends and/or statutory holidays.
