Job Description

Can you see yourself providing support to the Corporate Environmental Protection Program in its engagement initiatives with Indigenous peoples, and delivering on CNL’s commitments to different communities related to Effluent/Emissions Monitoring, Environmental Monitoring, Groundwater Monitoring, and environmental risk assessments? Our Chalk River location is looking for an Environmental Specialist to provide support with data collection and interpretation, addressing comments received from various Indigenous groups, and lead the inclusion of their Valued Components in program specific documentation and processes .
What will you be doing !
Participating in dialogue with representatives of Indigenous communities at the staff, consultant and leadership levels through meetings, site visits and virtual appointments, communicating in culturally appropriate language all activities of interest at CNL.
Preparing communication and training material for representatives of different Indigenous groups on Valued Components at CRL (e.g. monitoring protocols, trend evaluations, risk assessment, etc.) to facilitate discussions with the different Indigenous groups. Requires ability to effectively communicate, listen and engage in a discussion with Indigenous peoples on Valued Components.
Providing technical reviews and responses to the different Indigenous group’s requests in relation to Valued Components, CNL’s commitments related to environmental monitoring, and provide advice and guidance to different projects on inclusion of Valued Components and the monitoring of these following engagement sessions.
Maintaining effective, collaborative relationships with Stakeholder Relations and Corporate Affairs teams and individual staff to help ensure the settings and achievements of joint objectives.
Maintaining up-to-date understanding of technical and environmental project details, schedules and activities through interactions with ERM and Capital Projects staff.
Actively participating in activities related to the delivery of CNL’s commitments such as, conducting field work, developing protocols for monitoring Valued Components of interest not currently monitored, and ensuring integration into the Corporate Environmental Protection Program documents.

What we are looking for :
Someone who has the ability to:
Demonstrate excellent knowledge of Federal and Ontario environmental laws and regulations is required.
Demonstrate knowledge of environmental monitoring program design principles and best practices, results interpretation methodologies, environmental risk assessment methodologies, and field/laboratory protocols is required.
Demonstrate knowledge of the Canadian Standards Association suite of N288 environmental standards is required.
Effectively communicate and public presentation skills are required.
Written communication skills is required to capture the outcome and resolution of engagement initiatives.
Interact effectively with field/laboratory teams, managers, project teams, regulatory affairs, Indigenous communities, and support groups, and to work as a part of a team is required.
Assess work conditions and quickly identify non-compliances and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
This position will often require the development of processes that may not yet exist at CNL or a change in current practices, hence requiring a high level of problem solving.
Experience:
Work experience of at least 5 years in the environmental field with demonstrated increase in responsibility is required.
Some knowledge of ISO-14001 standards and its application is desirable.
Familiarity with use of data management and project management software is highly desirable.
Work experience with Indigenous communities is required.
Experience with environmental monitoring, risk assessments and best industry practices is required.
Work experience with environmental monitoring equipment and environmental risk assessment modelling tools is desirable.
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft office software including PowerPoint, Excel and Word is required.
Knowledge and experience with mapping software such as MapInfo or ArcGIS is required.
Work experience in a nuclear facility would be desirable.
Education:
Honours Bachelor in Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering or related field from a university of recognized standing or membership in scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom . CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions :
Frequent on-site and in-field presence will be required depending on operational requirements.
Quick decision-making especially when in the field.
The schedule can be highly variable when working with different groups and the incumbent will have to be able to pivot quickly and adjust the schedule, pull the appropriate staff and adjust logistics as required.
Work in the field including under varying weather conditions.
Field work can involve walking long distances in a forested environment and being outdoors for an extended period of time.
The office working environment is offered in a cubicle and or shared space setting.
Office work environment 60% – 75% Field work required 25% – 40%
