Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
STATUS: Auxiliary
NO. OF POSITIONS: Four
UNION: CUPE, Local 387
HOURS OF WORK: 4-10 hours per week
SALARY: $27.20 – $29.46 per hour
plus 12% in lieu of benefits (2024 rates)

The City of New Westminster has auxiliary positions available for children’s recreation based programs. Programs include childminding, cooking, science, sports and arts for children 12 years and under. Locations include təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, Queensborough Community Centre and New Westminster Schools. Candidates considered for these roles must have the ability to prepare and implement lesson plans with a focus on quality, creativity and safety. Provide supervision and leadership to their program group, take initiative and work with limited supervision. Have experience teaching children in specific skills as above; and flexible in their teaching approach.

Successful applicants will possess the following:
• Current Emergency First Aid and CPR C Certificate.
• Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
• Experience working with children in a community recreation setting.
• Flexible schedule including some weekend work.
• Ability to successfully pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.

Desired Assets:
• Community recreation program leadership experience is preferred.
• Certifications related to program development and implementation.
• Experience supervising children at off site locations or in a child minding setting.
• Experience working with children with a variety of support needs.
• Experience in specialized instructional skill in visual arts or performing arts.
• Experience in teaching sports, science, or cooking.
• Courses in recreation or a related field, supplemented by experience in children’s programming.

Duties Include:
• Provide program leadership to children in a safe, positive, fun manner.
• Plan, lead and implement developmentally appropriate recreation programs for children.
• Liaise with parents and members of the community.
