What your key role will be
As the Communications Operator, you will contribute to our continued success by handling non-emergency police calls and assisting the public with general reception-related services. In addition to this, your role includes, but is not limited to:
Front Counter Support: You’ll assist with a wide range of administrative processes, including helping public visitors get in touch with the correct contact or offering in-person non-emergency assistance, as well as referring non-police matters to appropriate resources and managing the courier deliveries for the department.
Communication: You’ll have excellent communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly and simply. As well, you are an active listener, who ensures you understand directions and information.
Customer Focus: You’ll be happiest when working with the public on their non-emergency situations and you take great pride in rolling up your sleeves to get even the smallest of tasks done.
Decision Making: You’ll have strong decision making skills, which will allow you to make quick and confident assessments of our policies and procedures and bring forward suggestions to improve our processes.
Time Management: You’ll manage your time and resources to ensure work is completed efficiently and with minimal supervision.
Team Player: You’ll genuinely enjoy engaging with your teammates to get the work done. You believe in the importance of building and maintaining strong working relationships.
Planning and Organizing: You’ll have strong organizational skills as well as the ability to adapt and manage multiple tasks and details in a fast-paced environment.
What you bring to this role
You will have experience and success in many of the following areas:
You have completed Grade 12
You have considerable experience as a Communications Operator, delivering non-emergency police incident report call-taking or equivalent relevant experience
You have top-notch communication skills including the ability to interpret and explain laws, rules and regulations to the public
You are motivated, compassionate, and empathetic with a genuine desire to help others
You support and promote a diverse, inclusive, and healthy workplace
You can listen and discern what information is significant, obtain all relevant details on complaints, and communicate with accuracy for those incidents requiring police response and can advise the public of action to be taken
You are confident working with (or learning) police CAD, CPIC, PRIME/RMS and related equipment
You have a demonstrated ability to act calmly and effectively in challenging situations; as well as deal tactfully, compassionately and effectively with the public and to determine the facts of an incident from distraught, excited or intoxicated persons, or those with language barriers
You have considerable knowledge of (or the ability to learn) the Criminal Code of Canada, the Motor Vehicle Act and other appropriate bylaws and regulations; as well as knowledge of other agencies or services available
You can thrive in a fast-paced environment and navigate your priorities independently
You can adapt to the dynamic needs of the position as well as the department
You can navigate your role while exercising considerable confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
You can pass and maintain a security clearance, including a background check and polygraph
