Job Description

The New Westminster Police Department is actively recruiting passionate and community-oriented individuals to join our Community Engagement Unit as Reserve Constables on a volunteer basis. This role is ideal for individuals who are dedicated to community service and are eager to make a positive impact.

What your key role will be
As a Reserve Constable, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute to public safety, engage with the community, and support regular members in their various duties. Your role includes, but is not limited to:

 Community Engagement: You’ll actively engage with the community through outreach initiatives, public events, and educational programs as well as foster positive relationships to enhance public trust and safety.

 Police Operations: You’ll assist our police officers in various capacities, patrol ride-alongs, traffic control, and community events.

 Crime Prevention: You’ll participate in crime prevention programs, disseminate information on safety, and contribute to proactive initiatives aimed at reducing criminal activities within the community.

 Training and Professional Development: You’ll support our Training Unit in the administration of training initiatives as well as assist in scenario-based training for our police officers.

 Emergency Response: You may be called upon to assist during emergencies, natural disasters, or other critical incidents by providing support to our police officers, other first responders, and the community.

 Adaptability: You’ll have the ability to adapt and manage multiple tasks and details in a fast-paced environment.

 Decision Making: You’ll have strong decision-making skills that allow you to make confident assessments of policies and procedures and apply them accordingly.

 Teamwork: You’ll genuinely enjoy engaging with your teammates to get the work done. You believe in the importance of building and maintaining strong working relationships. You’ll have a willingness to partner with and work alongside the police.

 Communication: You’ll have excellent communication and active listening skills as well as the ability to convey information clearly and simply while ensuring you understand directions and information.

What you bring to this role
You will have experience and success in many of the following areas:

 You have completed Grade 12
 You are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
 You are at least 19 years of age or older
 You must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
 You have the ability to volunteer on a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
 You have top-notch administrative and organizational skills
 You are motivated, compassionate, and empathetic with a genuine desire to help others
 You support and promote a diverse, inclusive, and healthy workplace
 You thrive in a fast-paced environment and navigate your priorities independently
 You adapt to the dynamic needs of the position as well as the department
 You navigate your role while exercising considerable confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy
 You pass and maintain a security clearance, including a background check and polygraph
 You must pass and maintain your use-of force qualification
 You must stay updated on the latest policies, procedures, and best practices of the Reserve Constable Program
