Job Description

The təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre is a 10,644 square metre facility scheduled to open Spring 2024. This state of the art dual natatorium facility will be the first in Canada designed to achieve the Canadian Green Building Council Zero Carbon Building standard, LEED Gold standards and the first aquatic centre in North America to use a new innovative InBlue drum filtration system. Reporting to the Manager, Recreation Services and Facilities – təməsew̓txʷ, you will be a part of the P&R leadership team and assist with the direction, operation, budgeting, maintenance, staffing, programming, facility rentals and admission services at the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, and be responsible for the management and oversight of city-wide Fitness, Wellness and Sport Services. Your core responsibilities include: planning, organizing, budgeting and managing the administration of a wide range of recreation and related services; managing regular and auxiliary staff, including hiring, scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, coaching and developing, performance management, and all other people management practices; providing direction and leadership to program staff to ensure the effective and efficient development of programs, services and activities; ensuring programs and services are community focused and accessible to all members of the community; developing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal staff, City departments, external agencies, community associations and the public related to the delivery of recreation, health and education services; and acting as the facility manager when necessary.

Required languages: English

Education level:  A degree in recreation studies, business administration or other related discipline and considerable related work experience in recreation including 3 years of progressive supervisory and leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required skills:  Knowledge of the concepts, practices and techniques of recreation administration, with an emphasis on fitness centres, group fitness programs, health and wellness, sport services and facility management.  Able to work with minimum supervision, demonstrating a high degree of initiative and ability to produce high quality work under tight deadlines.  Planning and coordination skills to manage the development, implementation, expansion and delivery of a wide range of specialized programs and services.  Knowledge of municipal functions and operations.  Research and analytical skills to prepare feasibility studies and long term plans.  Communication and interpersonal skills for community liaison and to collaborate across departments.  Problem-solving and decision-making skills to effectively allocate limited resources and determine program, staffing and service needs.  People leadership skills to coach, mentor, manage and develop staff.  Passionate and experienced in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-racism and Reconciliation work.  Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures, including health and safety.
