Job Description
The City of New Westminster is seeking interest from the public to serve on the New Westminster Police Board. Board members receive an honorarium and are appointed to a one-year initial term, which may be renewed up to a maximum of 6 years. This is a volunteer opportunity through an Order in Council appointment.
Police organizations today face challenges and difficult decisions resulting from three major factors: increasing service expectations, more sophisticated criminal activity, and limited financial and human resources. Under the Police Act, and in consultation with the Chief Constable, the Police Board is required each year to determine the priorities, goals, budget, and strategic priorities/objectives for the Department. The Board is also responsible for service and policy complaints related to its Police Department.
The Board is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We believe that a broad range of perspectives leads to better decision-making and a more harmonious community. Your unique experiences and perspectives are essential to our shared success. As such, we encourage individuals from all backgrounds, experiences, and skillsets to apply:
• Whether you have formal degrees or have learned valuable life lessons through other means, your educational journey matters.
• Whether you’ve worked in law enforcement, education, healthcare, technology, business, or any other field, your professional background enriches our Board.
• If you’ve held leadership positions, volunteer roles, managed teams, or led projects, your experience can help us drive meaningful change.
• Your unique life experiences, challenges, and triumphs can bring fresh perspectives to the Board.
• While not mandatory, legal expertise is an asset, as it can help us navigate complex legal matters.
• You will represent the diverse voices of our community, ensuring their concerns and needs are heard and addressed.
Additional Requirements:
• Residence and/or business interests in the City of New Westminster (preferred);
• Canadian Citizenship and residence in BC for at least 6 months;
• Willingness to submit to a criminal record review and personal interview;
• Commitment to fairness, avoiding conflict of interest, and maintaining neutrality/objectivity;
• Willingness, ability, and availability to meet time-commitments related to Board duties; and
• Ability to work with a variety of situations, groups, and people, and to deal with difficult interpersonal situations.
We encourage applications from all individuals who reflect the diversity of our community including women, visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression (LGBTQ2S+), and all others who may contribute to diversity on our Board.
