Indigenous Education Teacher

OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Teacher, Indigenous Education, provides leadership, service and support at the school and district level. The Teacher is responsible for meeting Alberta Education requirements for the assessment, identification and programming for Indigenous students. In addition, as a team member of Learning Services, the Teacher will work collaboratively on provincial/district initiatives, district priorities, emergent issues, assessment, differentiated instruction and liaising with Alberta Education and other external agencies/groups.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Enhances permeation of Catholicity throughout the district within Indigenous Education
Provides leadership to schools and collaborates with district personnel to support and promote quality Indigenous academic and cultural programming and student resiliency
Provides appropriate program recommendations, in collaboration with district Learning Services personnel, in order to foster student success
Provides support with diverse learner programming
Provides teachers with information related to research, pedagogy and best practice in teaching, learning and assessment in programming for Indigenous students
Collaborates with Learning Services teams across areas and provides district level professional development opportunities for appropriate district personnel
Consults with parents and school based administrators where necessary
Liaises with families, nations, institutions, agencies and organizations that support programming in the area of Indigenous student success
Provides input into district report and document preparation
Ensures communication of the district’s Indigenous Education philosophy, programs and services to school staff
Participates in the planning, organization and implementation of district wide events and in­ services for Indigenous students and parents
Performs other duties as may be assigned by Learning Services

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Alberta permanent professional teaching certificate
Valid Alberta driver’s license and reliable vehicle (Mileage reimbursed at district rate)
Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience preferable
Evidence of specialized study or post graduate course work in the area of diverse learning is preferred
Extensive experience with Indigenous knowledge and background, connection with the land, and evidence of specialized study or post graduate course work in the area of Indigenous studies preferred
Current Pastoral Letter (forms available on the district intranet site)
Knowledge of instructional strategies, resources and materials that support instructional programming and cultural enhancements for Indigenous student success
Knowledge of Alberta Education’s mandates and programs related to Indigenous education
Understanding of Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and implementation of TQS Standard 5,2,1
Leadership experience that demonstrates the ability to work independently and collaboratively; able to prioritize tasks, show initiative and complete complex projects
Experience and knowledge in the understanding and integration of technology into supporting success for all students

RESPONSIBLE TO:

In the performance of the above responsibilities, the Teacher, Indigenous Education reports to Indigenous Education Supervisor

LENGTH OF TERM:

This is a five-year term appointment. The first year is acting, the second, third, fourth and fifth years are part of the regular term and based on the program needs of the District and Alberta Education, budget considerations and Learning Services department.
