Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Engineering Operations
STATUS: Full Time
NO. OF POSITIONS: Two
UNION: CUPE, Local 387
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week
SALARY: $31.11 per hour plus benefits (2021 rates)

Reporting to the Superintendent of Streets, you will perform skilled work in formsetting and concrete finishing relative to the construction of sidewalks, curbs, steps, retaining walls, stairs, gutters and related facilities. You will be responsible for selecting and measuring material; cutting and setting forms in accordance with established line and grade; placing, screeding, floating and finishing concrete surfaces, using floats, trowels, markers and edgers and installing reinforcing materials and expansion joints. You will also be responsible for performing various maintenance tasks that may arise within the Streets department including assisting with snow/ice control during winter operations.

If you have the following characteristics and qualifications, we want to hear from you:
• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent and related experience in formsetting and concrete finishing.
• Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices used in setting forms for concrete work.
• Considerable knowledge in the materials, tools and equipment used for concrete work.
• Good knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in concrete finishing on sidewalks, curbs and related concrete maintenance and construction projects.
• Ability to perform skilled formsetting and concrete finishing duties.
• Ability to understand and work from line and grade markers and instructions.
• Ability to follow the safety precautions required in the work.
• Ability to effectively perform tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members and other City departments.
• Ability to demonstrate and provide exceptional customer service skills.
• Ability to perform manual/physical labour and to work in all weather conditions.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in formsetting and concrete finishing work.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. (Class 3 with air brake endorsement is preferred).
• The successful candidate must be able to successfully pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check.
