Freshmart Neepawa is seeking a reliable and hardworking Building Maintenance Helper to join our facilities team. Under the supervision of the Facilities Manager or Store Manager, the incumbent will assist in the upkeep, repair, and preventive maintenance of all aspects of the store building, equipment, and grounds. This is a hands-on, physical role requiring a good work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to workplace safety.
General Building Maintenance
• Inspect store structure and complete minor repairs, painting, lighting replacement, and deficiency reporting.
Plumbing & Electrical Assistance
• Assist with basic plumbing/electrical tasks and report leaks, outlet issues, or other concerns.
HVAC & Refrigeration Support
• Clean HVAC filters/vents, monitor refrigeration units, and assist technicians as needed.
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
• Maintain exterior areas, including snow removal, landscaping, waste disposal, and safe walkways.
Equipment & Fixtures
• Assemble, move, and maintain store fixtures, carts, tools, equipment, and renovation setups.
Safety & Compliance
• Follow safety policies, complete hazard checks, maintain clean work areas, attend training, and use PPE.
Administrative & Other Duties
• Maintain a maintenance log of completed tasks, parts used, and upcoming scheduled maintenance.
• Assist in receiving and inventorying maintenance supplies and materials.
• Collaborate with all store departments to minimize disruption during maintenance activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Store Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma preferred.
• Previous experience in building maintenance, construction, or a related trade is an asset.
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, or HVAC is an advantage.
• Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English.
• Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot basic maintenance issues.
• Physical fitness – ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
• Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
• Team-oriented with a positive, cooperative attitude.
• Strong attention to detail and pride in quality workmanship.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced retail environment.
• Safety-conscious mindset with familiarity with WHMIS and OH&S standards.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment : Indoor retail store and outdoor grounds; exposure to varying temperatures
Physical Demands : Frequent lifting, bending, standing, climbing ladders; physically demanding
Schedule : Monday to Sunday (rotating); may include early mornings, evenings & holidays
PPE Required : Safety footwear, gloves, safety glasses, hard hat (where applicable)
Travel : Local only; no out-of-town travel required

Required languages: English

Education level: High School diploma or equivalent
